“Taiji emerges from wuji.  It is the origin
of movement and stillness, the mother
of yin and yang.  In movement the
principle is to open, and in stillness the
principle is to close.”
Wang Zhong Yue
Translated as “Grand Ultimate Boxing”,
Taijiquan (also Tai Chi Chuan ) has five
major family styles in practice today.
These are the Chen, Yang, Wu, Wu Hao,
and Sun styles.  Created by Chen Wang
Ting around the late 1600’s (an officer in
the Chinese Ming  Dynasty and 9th
generation patriarch of the Chen family),
Chen Style is the oldest as well as the
forbearer of the other Tai Chi styles.
It is said that upon his retirement from
the military, Chen combined his
immense understanding of martial arts,
philosophy, and medical knowledge to
create what is known today as Chen
Style Taijiquan.
Chen Wang Ting and his
Coleague, Jiang Fa
"I sigh to think of those years, wearing
armor with a lance in my hand.

We swept away countless enemies,
several times in mortal danger.

I was awarded with honors, all to no avail.

Now that I am old and short of breath, my
only constant companion is the book
(Huang Ting).

When listless I practice boxing routines,
during busy times I plough the fields."

Remembrance) by Chen Wang Ting

The origin of Taijiquan has spawned heated debate between scholars for
many years.  Some say that the foundation of taiji dates back to the 3rd
century C.E., the Daoist Temple on Wudang Mountain, or the Shoalin
Temple in Henan.  Others also point to a mysterious monk named Zhang
San Feng, an immortal reputed to have lived across three dynasties and
possibly over 600 years.  Now while much of this information does come
from legitimate documents, a good portion is said to come from hearsay
and possibly fictitious sources.  Also there is some evidence that certain
facts have been distorted to promote particular lineages.  Summarily, this
will always be a source for argument and discussion and probably will
remain so for ever.  However the most concrete evidence to a source is the
Chenjiagou village in the Henan province of China.  Here there is recorded
history of the 9th generation patriarch of the Chen Family named, Chen
Wang Ting (1600-1680).  He is credited with creating the original system
from which is derived all the other major branches of Taijiquan in practice in
the world today.

History and Background:
"Taijiquan is based on the boxing style
handed down within the Chen Family and
is in accordance with the theory of Book of
Changes, or yi Jing, the traditional Chinese
medical theories and practices of jingluo,
daoyin, tuna, and also the principles of
dynamics.  The creators of Taijiquan
comprehensively summed up all of the
above in creating boxing routines whose
movements have the characteristic of
alternating ying with yang, hard force with
soft force, and quick movements with slow
ones; having leaping and rapid energy
releasing movements, and being
possessed with a relaxed yet resilient and
wave-like, vibrational type of energy.  This
is in accord with human physiology and
natural principles, and that is why the art is
known as "Taijiquan" (boxing art based on
the Chinese cosmological principle of the
primordial state of matter possessing the
two inherent potential energies of ying and
yang."
